My CD/DVD drive won't read CDs/DVDs. Why?

To resolve this issue, I recommend you to perform the following troubleshooting steps. If the issue still persist even after performing the steps then the issue could be next to the hardware of the Optical drive.

Step 1:

=== Reinstall the drivers ===

1. Right-click My Computer and select Properties.

2. Select the Hardware tab.

3. Click the Device Manager.

4. Click the + sign next to CDROM.

5. Click the first device timetabled under CDROM to give emphasis to it.

6. Click Remove to remove the CD-ROM device driver.

7. Click OK for confirmation.

8. Repeat steps 4 through 7 to remove all CD/DVD device drivers.

9. Close the System Properties box.

10. Restart the computer by clicking Start, Shut down, Restart, and later OK.

On next startup Windows XP will reinstall topical set of device drivers.

Reinstallation of the CD drive should resolve the issue.

Step 2: If issue persist, download and run a fix from the following URL:

Download XP_CD-DVD-Fix.vbs and save this record to your hard drive. Navigate to where on earth you saved it and double click the wallet to extract the contents. Locate the EXE file you extracted and double click it. A confirmation dialog will appear when the calligraphy is done. You may need to reboot for the adjustment to take effect.
